Less power - and cleaner power
Two things decide what an AI request costs the planet: where the data centre's electricity comes from, and how many tokens the answer takes. We work on both.
How we pick infrastructure partners
We do not build our own data centres. So the question is what we rent them on - and the first criterion is how much renewable energy actually runs the site, not the price per GPU hour.
Renewable share
How much of the electricity a site actually runs on comes from water, wind and sun? That is our first question.
Shown, not bought
We want figures for the site and the year. Certificates bought somewhere else do not count as clean power with us.
Efficiency of the site
PUE, liquid cooling, low overhead. Power that goes into cooling does not finish a single task.
Waste heat
Sites that feed their waste heat into a district network instead of the air come first with us.
Our sites are in Switzerland today. The criteria above hold regardless - a Swiss address on its own is not a sustainability argument.
The greenest token is the one never generated
The second lever is ours alone. Every task a smaller model finishes, and every context that does not run through the GPU twice, saves power - straight away, and without a contract.
Smaller models
A rename, a test, a commit message: most work needs no large model. Keera takes the smallest one that can finish the task.
Routing per request
The gateway decides for each request which model answers, and escalates only when the small one is not enough.
Caching
Recurring prompts and repository context sit in the cache. Sending the same context twice costs twice - in money and in power.
The same token figures that show cost per team in the gateway's audit log also show where energy goes.
The story
Somebody else pays Omnivor's bill
In the story Keera is built against, there is a corporation called Omnivor. It is invented. What it does with power and water is not.
Omnivor
It builds where power is cheap and nobody asks questions, cools with river water that is already too warm in summer, and blows the waste heat into the air. The region pays for it.
Keera
Keera runs in sites we picked on renewable energy and waste-heat reuse, and sends each task to the smallest model that can do it. That does not make it climate neutral - it makes it checkable.
The Omnivor corporation does not exist. The clauses and the data centres we built it from do.
What we claim - and what we do not
Green promises are easy to make and hard to prove. Here is the line we hold.
What we say
- We pick infrastructure partners on renewable energy and efficiency, not only on price.
- Smaller models, routing and caching cut the power a task takes.
What we do not say
- That AI is climate neutral - or that offsets make it so.
- Exact per-request figures we cannot yet measure.
What we are working on
- Per-tenant energy reporting in the gateway's audit log.
- A published methodology before we publish any number.
